can I Unmask to Mask again

By default, we have an application where Masking is the default state, we have a form where we need to have 90% of the form unmasked aside from one part.
I used the approach
unmask
mask
approach but does seem to work there is something wrong with it, am I forced to unmask every element that I need to display?
and there is a reason for that ?.
