Do FullStory Sessions End when User Closes Browser Tab?

New

Do FullStory Sessions End when a User closes the Chrome Browser tab? We have Users, example opening and closing a browser tabs 50 times a day within 30 min, which is counting towards 50 sessions. This is taking our data usage limit. Is there anyway to prevent and consolidate ? I thought a session is defined as 30 min in general.

  • Hey @MarkAlex45 if that is the only browser tab open, then yes the session will end. I don’t believe there’s any way to change this because of the way FullStory works – once the web page is closed, the session ends, DOM Mutation ends, and FullStory finishes.

We’ve seen similar issues with other clients where multiple hits over the day throttle up usage. Although FullStory (and we at CXperts) believe in full capture, there are some times where it might not make sense. Here are a few ideas for you to consider:

    Click-Based Activation

You can wrap your FullStory container around a click based activation vs. page load; this way, you’re just tracking “engagers” and not just visitors.

    Smart Sampling

You can wrap a random number generator to your script to throttle down by your session capture by a certain percentages, like 20% of sessions. Admittedly, when re-reading your issue above, I don’t think this is going to solve the bigger issue but still may be of interest.

    Some notes:

    • Check with Support. Before exploring the above suggested options, it may be worth pinging FullStory support with a link to a user who is generating those multiple sessions in a day - they may have other ideas to add.
    • Considerations. there are drawbacks for all the above, including warping of your data, loss of visibility to some audiences and their behavior, etc. so it’s best to weigh pros and cons in your approach.

    Best of luck!
