Bounce Rate as a metric?
Answered
Hello!
I’m new to Fullstory, and I’m trying to create a dashboard to include a card for average bounce rate.
I’m not sure if I’m setting the card up correctly, but I’m trying to set it the following way
Metric => Unique Sessions
Event => Visited Page => any - when Time since Session Start is less than 5 seconds
divided by
Metric => Unique Sessions
Event => Any activity
Does this look right? It seems like we can get this information through Segments, but I’m trying to create a card for it.
I thought about using Time on Page, instead of Time since Session Start, but I’m interested in capturing people leaving after initializing a session, rather than leaving after visiting any page.
Thanks in advance!

Hi @smallchonker okay so I look at Bounces differently … sorta.
Firstly, I would build my bounce to look like this:

So we’re pretty aligned.
Furthermore, my idea of a bounce is someone that hits the site and doesn’t do anything. To achieve this I would build a Segment and use the Exclude filter (and you could add a total active time as well:

In that Segment you’ll get your rolled up details:

Once it’s built you’ll also have access to it in other areas of FullStory as well, and I like to built Bounces by URL in Metrics to start to identify which areas of the site need optimization.
Hope that helps!
Hello!
Thanks for these, they are really helpful!
I do have a few follow up questions.
If someone goes from one page to another, would that person be lumped under Time on Page?
I ask because I’m mainly interested in someone visiting a website, then leaving without activity -- as opposed to someone visiting a website => goes to another page without activity.
That was the reason I chose Time since Session Start, since I was under the impression that’s what this metric captures -- bouncing after initial visit, without going to other pages.
As for Segments, is there a way to add this as a card?
I come from mainly a Google Analytics background, and they have overall Bounce Rate in readily accessible in the main dashboard. I’m basically more or less trying to replicate the main metrics in Fullstory as a starting point :)
Hey @smallchonker -
By using the “doesn’t click anything” filter you are by proxy keeping it to users who are visiting a page and leaving without going to other pages – I guess unless users are tabbing and hitting enter to navigate to a new page, but I can’t imagine that’s a large population of users.
We can’t add Segments to cards - only Metrics, Journeys, and Funnels – but you could do a Metric where users do any activity then add your Bounces Segment to that and you’ve got your data.
I think a fundamental difference with FullStory – and this we’ll say is a mix of my opinion and experience – is FullStory is based on what people do, not what they don’t do, so that’s why bounces is a little less intuitive than something like GA.
Hope that helps!
Steven
Thanks again for your input.
Everything you said makes sense. I’m still learning about the features that sets Fullstory apart from other analytics tools -- and I think I need to frame my mind around taking advantage of those features rather than trying to more or less replicate features that exist in other analytics tools.
Hey @smallchonker! Thanks so much for posting and for starting a great conversation! Thanks also to @stevenshyne for your fantastic input as always! 😊

@stevenshyne I assume that you could just add the particular page or URL you are interested in the metric right? that way you can target specific URLs? Something like this. Also is unique sessions a better indicator than unique users?

I was also thinking in using the Exit Page is True in a segment, like this:

plus adding an exclusion for clicked anything

Hi there, these image links are no longer working. Could someone please describe what the images depicted?
Veronica Cox Hi! The images are now in the comments. (Sorry, that was a byproduct of switching our Community platform! Appreciate you asking about that.)
