How to create a metric around "searches per user"

New

Hello!

What is the best way to tag how many searches (in a search bar) an individual user completes as well as an aggregate “average searches per user”?

  • Hi, @david! Thanks for reaching out! 😊

Great question! There are likely a few different metrics you could take a look at but, ultimately, the best option for you will be based on your website. For example, you could consider building a metric based off of:

    • A Click event on the button a user would have to click when searching your website
    • A Change event on the search textbox itself (Note: This could include users that entered text in your search bar but did not actually submit their search)
    • A Visited URL event if there is something in the URL that indicates the user is viewing their search results (for example, a /search URL path or something similar)

If none of those seem like good options for the specific search bar you’re interested in tracking, you may want to consider instrumenting a custom event using our FS.event API that would fire each time a user searches your website. Once you’ve identified the metric you’d like to use to track the number of searches, the next step would be to build a dashboard card. I’ve included two examples below to give you a few ideas and help point you in the right direction.

Average Number of Searches per User

    Dashboard Card Type: Single Metric

    Total Searches per User

    Dashboard Cart Type: Dimensionality Card

I hope this helps! Please don’t hesitate to reach out should you have any other questions! 😄
