Is there a way to pick the metric for a dashboard card from the dashboard itself?

New

After the FullStory UI update I’m struggling a bit to create and edit dashboards.  I’m hoping I’m missing a trick and someone can point me in the right direction.  😃

What I want to do, and was able to do previously, is create a card on a dashboard and then select an existing metric to use on the card.  This doesn’t seem to be possible as to use an existing metric I have to go to the metric itself and then edit the date range etc. and add it to the dashboard.

Similarly I used to be able to duplicate an existing card on a dashboard and then change the individual card to pick a different metric or segment.  Now when I duplicate a card it appears to also create a duplicate of the metric and I also can’t change the card to use a different, existing, metric.

This also does make me wonder, if I update the segment, dimensions, or date range for a metric to add it to a dashboard, does this change the properties for other locations where the metric is used?

  • (Edit: I’ve removed a bit of this comment for clarity. A recent bug fix has corrected the duplicate card issue!)

Hi @Rebecca Ratcliffe! Great to see you here, and thanks for the question. With the new update, cards and metrics do work a little differently.

    • If you want to add an existing metric to a dashboard, go to the metric and click Add to Dashboard.
    • If you want to add a new metric to a dashboard, you can start straight from the dashboard and click Add a card to configure your metric and card all at once.
    • If you duplicate a card on a dashboard, we’ll create a new card attached to a copy of your original metric. Any edits you make to this copy will not affect your original metric.
    • If you duplicate a card on a dashboard, you’re essentially creating a new visualization of the same underlying metric. Any edits to the metric will apply to any other cards where the metric is present as well.

That said, we’ve definitely heard feedback on these changes and have some updates planned soon that will make these flows easier! Our team is actively working on improving the “Add existing metric” flow and the “Duplicate card” flow so that you have more control over whether or not you’re editing the underlying metric.

  • Hi @megan,  thanks for the update.  I’m glad it’s not just me - I was getting so confused.  :)

Checking I understand the current setup, for my existing metrics which I reuse across dashboards (for example I have a metric for number of users that I reuse with different segments/dimensionality on different dashboards) if I edit the display of a card e.g. from a number to a trend graph, using the metric this will update all cards where that metric is currently used.  Is that correct?

If I’m honest, I think I preferred the way the metrics were separate to the dashboard cards and could be reused so I’ll keep an eye out for the updates to the flow.  PS: I’m happy to share more details about why/how I use them with your team if it would help.

    Thanks again.  😃

  • @Rebecca Ratcliffe You’re welcome! That’s correct, yes. Editing the visual display of an existing metric will update the visualization on any cards where that metric is displayed.

I also just checked in with our team and have a quick edit for you from my last response. When you duplicate a card on the dashboard, it should now create a copy of your original metric so that you can edit that card independently without affecting the original. This was a bug fix that went out last week to correct the original duplication issue.

Here’s a quick video that shows you the two different flows. (Pardon my scratchy voice–I’ve got a bit of a cold!)

As for more feedback, that would be incredibly helpful. I’d love to introduce you to our Product Manager, James, for a deeper dive. I’ll set that up via email in just a moment, and thank you for being so willing to share!

  • Hi @megan I don’t think there is a way to add metrics from the Dashboard right? Often times we create a dashboard and start adding cards there, which means those metrics are not “globally” available. So I wonder if having a way to add the metric created on the dashboard to the Metrics be something the FS team is evaluating?

    Thanks

  • Hey @DataSeed99! When you add a new card to a Dashboard, it should also create the corresponding Metric in your Library (and become globally available for use). If you’re not seeing that behavior in your account, then I’d definitely recommend opening a Support Ticket so we can take a look at what’s happening!

  • thanks @megan I can see the metrics in the library….and now I’m crying 😭 because I see so many duplicated metrics with just slight differences in names but same event and filters, ugh! I wonder if a prompt telling you the metric already exists or that you’re about to create a duplicate would help keep the metric library organized. I have 658 metrics and I. et many of those are duplicates, lol

  • @DataSeed99 Oh, no! What a mess. I ran this by our Product Team and have some updates for you… sending you an email in just a moment!
