Understanding Habitual Engagement Charts

Answered

I don't understand why a retention chart that is structured as “on or after” would not continuously decline. My understanding is that the denominator stays the same (day 1) and the numerator is the sum of the current day and day after. Meaning, the numerator is always getting smaller.

  • Hi Karen Abram! Thanks for your question.

When using the 'On or After' parameter in a retention chart, we won't count a user until their first visit that matches your event parameters within the time range you're using in the chart. As such, it's possible for the trend line to increase over time if there's a larger amount of users completing the start event on day 30 than on day 29, for example.

The way the 'On or After' parameter differs from the 'On' parameter is that we will continue counting a user each time they complete the return event. Let's say a user completes your start event on day 1 and then completes the return event on day 3, 5, and 8. Using the 'On' parameter, we'd only count them returning on day 3, the first time they complete the return event. Using the 'On or After' parameter, we'd count them returning on days 3, 5, and 8.
