Manual steps are interactive prompts that require user action to proceed through a tour. These steps engage users, ensuring they understand and interact with key features before moving on to the next part of the journey.

This article covers the following:

Manual tour step options

There are several types of manual tour step options: modal, pointer, slideout, and survey.

Modal

A modal is a window that overlays the main content, capturing the user's attention by appearing in the center of the screen. Use modals for major announcements, welcome messages, or when you need users to focus on important information before proceeding.

Configuration options:

  • Position: By default, the modal appears centered with a 100px top margin. Adjust the placement by modifying the border margin.
  • Fixed position: Enable this option to keep the modal fixed in place, ensuring it stays visible as the user scrolls.

Pointer

A pointer is a tooltip that highlights and points to a specific element on the page, helping users focus on important parts of the UI. Use pointers when you want to draw attention to a specific button, field, or feature.

Link the pointer step to a specific HTML element using the Guides and Surveys Chrome extension.

Configuration options:

  • Highlight: Enable highlighting to darken everything except the target element and the pointer bubble, drawing maximum attention to the element.
  • Coordinates: Define the absolute position of the pointer if you need precise placement.
  • Orientation: Specify whether the pointer appears at the bottom, top, left, or right of the target element.

Slideout

A slideout is a panel that slides into view from the bottom corner of the screen, providing additional information without covering the entire screen. Use slideouts for contextual tips or guidance that should not block the user's view of the main content.

Configuration options:

  • Slideout Position: Set the slideout to appear at the bottom left or bottom right corner of the screen.

Survey

A survey step allows you to collect user feedback during the tour. Use surveys to gather insights about user experience, satisfaction, or preferences at relevant moments in the user journey.

For detailed information about creating and configuring surveys, see Guides and Surveys Surveys.

Show/Hide close button

In the tour step settings, you can choose to display or hide the close (X) button on Modal, Pointer, and Slideout steps. This gives users the option to exit the tour at any point during the step.

Button and and progress configuration options

Configure how users navigate through tour steps using buttons and progress triggers.

Button types

Add buttons to your manual steps to control how users move through the tour:

  • Next Step: Moves the user to the next step in the tour.
  • Previous Step: Returns the user to the previous step.
  • Go to Step: Takes the user directly to a specific step within the tour.
  • Go to URL: Redirects the user to a specific web page.
  • Another Tour: Starts a new tour after the current one.
  • Check again later: Pauses the tour and resumes after a time period you specify (for example, 5 hours, days, weeks, or months). You can customize the button text.
  • Close Tour: Ends the current tour.

Button alignment

Control where buttons appear within the step:

  • Left: Align buttons to the left side of the step.
  • Center: Center the buttons within the step.
  • Right: Align buttons to the right side of the step.

Progress triggers

For Pointer and Slideout steps, you can define how users progress to the next step based on their actions:

  • Click of button: The user clicks a designated button to move forward.
  • Click of element: The user clicks a specific element (defined in the Element field) to advance.
  • Click anywhere on the screen: Any click on the page moves the user to the next step.
  • Next Step Trigger: The tour advances when a trigger condition is met (for example, an element appears or a hover event occurs).
  • On a reply to survey: After a user responds to a survey (for example, emoji or NPS), the next step appears automatically without displaying a "Thank you" message.

Note: Progress trigger options are available only for Pointer and Slideout steps, not for Modal steps.
