Guides and Surveys - Segmenting Users

With Guides and Surveys user segments, you can group users based on specific behaviors and attributes, enabling you to deliver highly personalized experiences. User properties that you send to Fullstory using the browser API appear in Guides and Surveys as tag values, which you can use as segment conditions alongside other criteria like tour state and checklist completion.

Note: While they share the same name, Guides and Surveys user segments are completely separate from Fullstory segments. Guides and Surveys segments group users for targeting guides and survey content, while Fullstory segments are used for analytics.

In this article:

Creating a new Guides and Surveys segment

  1. From within Guides and Surveys, click Users on the left hand menu, then select Segments.
  2. Click the + Add Segment button in the upper-right corner.
  3. Enter a Name and an optional Description for your segment.
  4. Define the Conditions that users must meet to be included.
  5. Click Create to save.

Tip: You can combine multiple conditions to fine-tune your targeting.

Available condition types

You can filter users using several data points:

  • Tag Value: Target users based on specific tag values.
  • Days Since Registration: Group users based on the number of days since they signed up.
  • Tour State: Filter by whether a user has completed a specific tour.
  • Checklist State: Segment by the overall completion status of a checklist.
  • Checklist Item State: Target users based on the completion of a specific item within a checklist.
  • Banner State: Group users based on whether they have seen a specific banner.

Managing your segments

You can edit or delete segments from the segments list.

  • Editing: Click the pencil icon next to any segment to update its name, description, or conditions.
  • Deleting: Click the bin icon to remove a segment. This action takes effect immediately and removes the segment association from all users.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does segment data refresh?

Guides and Surveys evaluates custom segment conditions every 4 hours. New users who meet the criteria will appear in the segment after the next scheduled sync.

What is the difference between Guides and Surveys segments and Fullstory segments?

Guides and Surveys user segments group users for the purpose of targeting guides and survey content. They are configured within Guides and Surveys under Users > Segments. Fullstory segments are used for analytics and are configured within the Fullstory app. The two types of segments are completely separate.

How do I use Fullstory user properties in segment conditions?

User properties that you send to Fullstory using the browser API appear in Guides and Surveys as Tag value conditions. When creating a segment, select Tag value as the condition type, then specify the tag name, operator, and expected value. For more details, see Guides and Surveys Fullstory User Properties.
